Silent Auction to Benefit North Texas Food Bank

Below is the information about a silent auction we are having at Quilt Country to benefit the North Texas Food Bank, which is critically low on supplies right now. Please consider entering a mini quilt to auction off or bidding on the minis that are donated! 100% of proceeds will go to the food bank.

I think overall I will have 11 quilts to donate! I am passionate about this topic! Here are a couple that I've made so far:

Silent Auction
Quilt Country enjoys participating in projects that benefit our local community. After reading an article in the newspaper, we realized that we simply must do something to help the local food bank. The article will tell you about the dire need for food. The article is very moving.
After some discussion, we decided to hold a silent auction of miniature quilts. This way the food bank can use the money to purchase exactly what is needed. We will have our yearly canned food drive later in the fall.
I realize that this isn’t much notice but the food bank needs our help! If you are like me, I don’t often start a project until the week or so before the deadline anyway. Please help us help the North Texas Food Bank and donate a mini quilt to this very worthwhile cause.
Auction Rules:
Completely finish, bind and label your quilt donation.
Size - minimum - 4” X 6”, maximum - 12” X 12”
Materials - Traditional piecing and appliqué, mixed media, any embellishments, dangles, points, etc are fine.
In some way permanently put your name, city/state and the date on the back of your quilt. This can be done with a marker or a label.
Include an index card, or similar size paper with your name, email address, address, phone number and the title of your art work. Email would be the fastest way to get in touch with you, so be sure to include your email address. We would like to let you know of the total amount raised for the food bank and also tell you about the bidding on your piece.
Bring or mail your mini to Quilt Country at the address below. Entries must be received by 5:00PM on Thursday, July 1.

A Very Special Charity Quilt

Best. Charity. Quilt. Ever.
There was quite a bit of red pulling it all together (minus that purple floral there) but it still had some diversity going. Cows, moose bears and pine trees, African women, red gingham and cats. Just so much going on!!!

This was a quilt that I just completed for a great customer. She made this with approximately 86 different paper pieced blocks. It was amazing! She wanted stitch in the ditch on every block and then something "amazing." She seemed pleased! I thought it turned out very well! It took about 2 weeks.....

THE VERY LAST DENIM QUILT THAT I WILL EVER QUILT!!!!!! They are just so thick and this one broke my machine! I spent a couple of hours fixing my mechanical monster. All is well and I just know better for next time! I'll add denim quilts to the list of things I'll never do again.....

I know it's been a while....I'm sorry. I have been doing some home health speech therapy and it has been using up much more of my time than I had planned! I feel like I barely get to quilt and I definitely haven't had time for blogging! I just finished teaching a feathers class and I have a few seconds so I thought I'd post really quickly! Here is Voncile's gorgeous Garden for My Wedding Ring that I just finished. It was on the frame for 10 days. I'll have to admit that as beautiful as it was, I was tired of looking at it.
I have a new class for longarmers! It's a Freehand 2 class-just more freehand fillers and allover designs! And look soon for the "How to deal with a problem quilt" class. I'm working hard on the curriculum and gathering test subjects...

We're in Florida!!! Sandy, Carol Mo, Debbie L, Micki, Connie, Joan, Phyllis and I are in Florida at a wonderful condo. We're doing quite a bit of sitting around and unorganized milling about. There is also a fair amount of eating! Carol Mo made baked brie last night. Mmmmmm, fancy.

Here are more pictures from Day 1 of Market and Day 2 of Market. My plan was to write a witty commentary of our days here, but I'm finding that I'm much more of a photojournalist. The humor of the day shows in our photos, doesn't it? We laugh a lot, we stop for potty breaks on the way, and we have a great time together. It is so fun to have a group of friends that you can count as family. I love these ladies and truly enjoy spending time with them!

I will tell you some of the funny things we've seen so far that there weren't photos to document.
1. a lady at show setup with 38DD tatas and a tube top, and not the squeezie kind
2. a lady in a booth, open to the public, with a strappy tank top and a granny bra underneath, with supportive straps 5 times wider than the tank top strap
3. a guy at one of the Japanese fabric booths that has hair reminiscent of Flock of Seagulls. I will try my hardest to get a photo of that one.....
4. two fortune cookie fortunes with typos
5. something else good that I'll remember later
Most of these things those you have to be there things, I guess.....

I don't have time to tell you about it because I have to go eat breakfast and then rush off to labor the day away, but I'll give you a photo summary. We had quilt retreat this weekend and I made this flower face frame out of fast2fuse and fabric. I thought it would be fun, and I still maintain that idea, but this particular flower ended up making everyone look sort of leonine. Here are some of the goofiest photos that happened. And Debbie had a bra accident. She was just sitting and innocently sewing and then her bra strap let go in the back and came flying out the neck of her shirt. Baboioioioing.

Sandy's Bathroom

Sandy decided to redecorate her guest bathroom around a piece of fabric that struck her fancy. She made her shower curtain, found some awesome towels and a few things for the walls, but still has several empty spots on the walls (it's a large room). So we worked together to create a few quilted items that she may use on the walls. Here are the things that I quilted for that, with no real specific end use in mind.....the first photo is actually the back of piece of the shell fabric where I just quilted the outlines on the fabric.

We had a storm the other day and our power at the store did some wierd stuff, leaving all the lights on, the fans running half speed and the AC off!! It got hot pretty quickly in there. The utility guys came and turned everything off for a while. It's hard to pick out fabric in the dark....

Another quilt retreat was had this weekend. Here is what I worked on most of the time. It's a quilt to go in our living room, which has a blue couch and a purple couch. I really am happy with how it turned out, and especially with the dotty fabric-it sparkles!

Speaking of Market in my last post, I've been on several trips to Market, usually in the fall to Houston. I have soooooo many great stories but I'm gonna share a couple only.

On my very first market trip ever, we were staying in this nasty, ratty motel. It was ridiculously bad, like in a movie. The drapes were 80s mauve, blue and teal, the bedspread was 70s brown and gold and the carpet was green. In the bathroom, the toilet bowl was an oval but the seat was round, so the bowl stuck out from under the seat about 4 inches. It was gross. In the middle of the first night, I wake up and hear a drip, drip, drip, so I get up to investigate. I was wearing my fleece footy pajames, and walked into the closet that was also the connecting room to our other travel buddies' room. I stepped into a pool of soggy waterlogged carpet. The ceiling was leaking. It's important to understand that this motel had no second floor, nor was it raining. I wake everybody up to move their stuff out of the flooding closet and I call the front desk. They were less than concerned and all they really said was, "We'll bring you another trash can." Thanks. Thanks a bunch. After we had placed the cans in strategic spots, we climb back into bed and my footy pajamas were totally soggy so my feet were wet and cold, and I didn't bring any other kind of jammies. I pulled my feet up and tried to sleep all scrunched up. It was miserable. In the morning, in the shower, there was water leaking from the tiled ceiling through the grout. It was freezing and a great brown color. Yeesh. So I called around that morning and found us a Best Western that was nicer, closer to our daily destination and was about the same price.
There are often visits to Target and Wal-Mart on our market trips. We invariably buy something very necessary, such as new flip flops or shaped ice cube trays. As my buddies and I were checking out, Sara said something and I joked "You wanna throw?" (this was a while ago). They wanted to know what that meant so I explained. The rest of the trip, they all tried to use their new phrase and kept saying things like, "I'm gonna throw you!"

Sandy made another version of the hibiscus and we did make a pattern to sell! All the important people are off to International Quilt Market in Portland, Oregon. I'm sort of jealous that I'm still here, but last time I went to Portland, my allergies went CRAZY!!!!!! I'm allergic to anything green, so it was a lot of sneezy, sniffly, stuff a kleenex up your nose days. Pitiful. So I didn't even ask if I could go this year. Maybe next time.

Retreat Projects

This is a new quilt that I worked on at quilt retreat this past weekend. It turned out better than I had hoped! As I was fusing and cutting, I was disappointed with my selection of reds, but the more it came together, the happier I was with it! I'll post a quilted photo later if quilting improves the overall effect.

Carol Mac was making a lovely sweatshirt jacket for Sandy and they needed a 'fitting' so I snapped these shots.

Inchies

Our swap group recently decided to get in on the fun new thing in the quilting world: the inchie. Anything goes as long as your piece stays under one inch. Our group actually changed halfway through to allow up to one and a half inch pieces. Most were made using a base of timtex or fast2fuse, and then embellishments were added to the surface. Several used different bases. All were extremely interesting! Here are the inchies that I made for the swap.

What I Do Every Day

I am a professional longarm machine quilter. (The professional label implies that I am paid to do this, not any specific level of expertise. ) It is basically a big sewing machine on wheels! I drive holding the handles and quilt the 3 layers of the quilt together for people. I love what I do! I look forward to work each day and it's an amazing blessing to be able to do something you love. In case you're not familiar with a longarm quilting machine, here is a photo:
